Japanese 205 player lot
Quote from Blazers on 19/02/2021, 20:35Hello again, all! I just took delivery of a Japanese 205 CDi player, several Japanese CDi games, and a really heavy-duty carrying case. Apart from wanting to share pictures with the community, I'd also like to ask if the player can safely be used in a standard NTSC (Continental US) environment without any sort of adapter.
The Japanese titles that were with the player, all with will be ReDumped in the near future, are:
Harvest of the Sun
Mozart
Renaissance Gallery
Palm Springs Open
Paint School I
Yuki Saito Anniversary (regional exclusive)
and best of all, the exclusive and very rare Horoscope title. Interestingly, it has a 1994 Copyright date, which seems fairly late in the game for CDi in Japan.
There were also, oddly, US copies of Bon Jovi: Keep the Faith and Tetris, both the later jewel-case versions and both complete with slipcovers.
The carrying case itself is very sturdy, though designed to fold open and come apart in segments.
There was a promotional booklet for the 205 player, which is not the user manual but rather a flyer that highlights various features and serves as a brochure of other available titles. Yuki Saito and Golgo 13 are notably mentioned. I guess we now know that they had to be purchased from Philips back in the day?
The player does have what appears to be a DVC installed, and on the flap for that "expansion port" there is a sticker that says it was assembled with parts from the trial run. No idea if that refers to the player itself or just the card in the slot.
Anyway, I haven't actually tried the player out yet, as I first want to be certain that it will be safe to use it in a standard US outlet. The titles will all be ReDumped, but once that's done if any CDi collectors are interested in trading for them or the case or even the player itself let me know. I'm pretty open to working great deals!

You definitely want to use a step down transformer from 120 to 100 V.

Japanese NTSC is similar USA NTSC, then may can use.
But, Japanese voltage is 100V. Be careful of over voltage.

Quote from CD-i Fan on 21/02/2021, 02:25A few quick questions for you @blazers
- When you get around to actually using the player, could you take a look at the player shell and see if it is "different" in some way?
- Would you mind opening up the player and share some photographs of the Mini-MMC board, esp. the ROM (it's near the front)?
- Same question for the DV cartridge, to see if it is any different then "regular"?
- Do you intend to keep this player or will it soon be gone again?
A remark about the "trial run" sticker: I have seen this before. Philips apparently did a "trial run" of DV cartridges or parts of them for production calibration and when they were done there were a lot of parts left, many of them apparently "out of spec". They assembled some of these into working cartridges and I think they were then sold or given to insiders, typically Philips employees, probably for free or a reduced price. To avoid any later complaints, these stickers were put on. Basically, "have fun with this, but if it breaks, we cannot help you".
The sticker pertains only to the DV cartridge, there is nothing "risky" about the rest player.

I was with the same idea about it.
About the 205/11, I am curious to see if a Japanese language version is available in the option menu...?
Keep us updated @blazers san 😉

I guess the next step is to get the step-down adapter to be able to safely use it.

Great info, I will indeed open it up soon, and I do not actually intend to hold on to it in the long run. The main reason I bought the whole lot was for the games, and Horoscope in particular. The player was just a bonus, and the outer case came as a complete surprise. I'm definitely willing to trade or sell the player itself. Same for the Knowlogy player, too. I just have to get that one dumped as well.
